Final Project

Use this space to post ideas about your final project or to discuss topics related to it. Also, the professor would appreciate it if you could attach a picture of yourself to these posts as well as the posts in the introduction section so he can work on learning your names.

Hi everyone! As part of the requirement for the final project (the volunteering option, not the research paper) we are supposed to create our own blog to document and journal all of our volunteer work we complete throughout the semester. So, here it is! A link to my blog for the course: http://www.SIS250Africa.blogspot.com. Please enter it into the address bar if it does not automatically take you there by clicking on it. My blog explains more about what I am going to be doing for my project but I'll give you a basic idea. I'm volunteering with Women Thrive Worldwide Coalition with a woman named Catalina Rojas. I am going to be helping her with one of her many projects. This particular one is specifically on Africa. I will be doing preliminary research for her, familiarizing her with Malia and Senegal, helping her to hire a consultant, and assisting her in planning her trips to both countries to assess current business situations there. The organization attempts to eliminate poverty by recognizing gender differences and targeting women as the key to doing this. In order to achieve this, Women Thrive pressures government to allocate their available money toward countries that need it to organizations that will help to accomplish what Women Thrive Worldwide believes in. Read all about my many experiences on my blog!

As my volunteer option for the final project, I have found an organization that works with Ethiopian Refugees/Immigrants in DC on many aspects of their lives in America. One portion of what they provide is a language class where I will be working as an ESL instructor. It should be really interesting, check out the blog!

Hi, I'm doing the Community Service Based Learning Option for my final project. I will be volunteering at the International Rescue Committee, helping refugees set up apartments, and be a mentor to families who have just arrived here and are experiencing US culture for the first time. I also have the opportunity to make an instructional video for the IRC, which would be shown at orientations. I felt that this was a good way to use my film background to help this organization. My blog is:

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to let everyone know the web address of my blog. I, along with several other students, am working with Irene to host a soccer tournament at AU for charity. Details are pretty sketchy right now but check my blog regularly for updates. Also, if anyone is interested in helping out we can always use it.

Hey guys, for my community service option i have hooked up with Irene Karistinos, captain of the women's soccer team to organize a barefoot 4 v 4 soccer match that will help raise money for the youth soccer league in Ethiopia. We will be targeting those children that are affected by HIV and AIDS. The event will take place on Sunday April 20th and definitely should be worth attending. For more information you can reach our website at http://dccfaa.org/. You can reach my blog at http://morganblo.blogspot.com/

Hi! I'm doing the volunteering option as a final project. So, this is the link to my blog: http://sis250eglantineleroi.blogspot.com/

I'm volunteering in a communication company that promotes African projects. There is not much yet on my blog. I just obtained an interview last week and so I just start working on it. But I encourage you to leave comments on my blog!

Hi. So for my final project I am volunteering with a new NGO called The Daima Project. It was started by a senior at American University named Matt Michels. I am working with him to help Daima get funding and support so it can begin to work on its goal which is bringing education about development issues in Africa to children in the United States. You can check out my blog at

I hope y'all are doing well on your projects!

Peace,

Hey guys! For my final paper I will be doing a research paper on Yoruba drumming. I have been doing some research and I have found a lot of information about how the Yoruba people used drumming as a means of connecting with their gods, the natural world around them, and their fellow community members. I was wondering if anyone else is doing research on the Yoruba people and if you have found some good sites or books. Thank you!

For my final paper I will be exploring the Yoruba theatre traditions in Nigeria both pre and post colonization.

Hey I just thought I would let everyone know a little about my paper! I decided to research South Africa because I am studying abroad there this summer. We are studying the development of democracy there, and I was really interested in how South Africa has become the way it is today. We all now a lot about the seperation of blacks and whites in South Africa due to apartheid, yet I wanted to dig deeper into the issue. What made the modern state it is today? I think it started with the colonization of the British and the Dutch and the policies they started. I wanted to focus my paper on these issues, starting with a mini-history of this colonization beginning with the Dutch, and talking about the creation of the Union of South Africa by the British. Then I would leave off with the modern roots of apartheid, since most of the history we know is modern day.
