Introductions
Write a quick introductory comment about who you are, where you're from and why you're taking Civilizations of Africa so we can get to know each other.
Hi, I'm Esther. I'm the TA for Professor LeVan's class. I live in Washington, DC and I'm majoring in International Studies and Economics. I've been interested in Africa for a long time and I'm planning on studying in Nigeria some time next year. If you have any questions for me about the class or administrative stuff, please feel free to email me at mist.esther@gmail.com.
Hi, I'm Krista, and I'm an international studies major. I am taking this class to learn more about Africa. I have always loved learning about history, but sadly, courses I've taken before have discussed the first humans and didn't turn to Africa again until the colonial period. Also, I hope to work for an international non-profit after graduation, and many NGOs deal alot with Africa, so it would be helpful to know more background about the culture.
Hi, I'm Celina. I'm a double major in International Studies (probably with a concentration on International Development) and Art History. This class fills a requirement in my SIS major. I've never taken an Africa class, and know little to nothing about the continent. I'm looking forward to learning something new.
I'm Chrissy; I'm a junior and also an international studies major. I have always been fascinated with Africa and the question of why it endures as the world's perpetually underprivileged continent. I'm hoping to study abroad in Kenya next semester, as well, so I'm sure this class will be good prep.
Hi, I'm Jamye. I'm a Sophomore in SOC and am taking this class as a Gen-Ed. I thought it would be interesting to learn about the history of Africa and the different cultures that live there.
Hello, I'm Sasha, and I'm a freshman in SIS, majoring in International Studies. I'm probably going to concentrate in Africa and International Development, so this class both fulfills requirements and is on a subject I am interested in.
I'm Maggie. I'm a Junior in SIS with a focus on Development and the Middle East. I'm taking this class to fulfill an SIS requirement and because I loved the last class I took with Professor Levan (I'm not sucking up, I swear!). I also know next to nothing about Africa, and am interested in changing this.
Hello, My name is Sarah. I am majoring in Psychology and minoring in Religion. I have been reading a lot about the ancients' mythologies since they are part of my interest in religion including ancient Egyptians. I am really fascinated with the ancient Egyptians culture, religion, and civilizations and I think (unlike Samuel Noah Kramer)that History does not begin at Mesopotamia but at Africa. :) This course is a gen-ed requirement for my program.
Hi, my name is Lauren and I am also SIS. This class both fulfills my major and is something I am curious about. I really enjoy studying global economics and am very interested in learning about Africa's development. I look forward to learning more about the continent and it's people!

I'm a double major, finance and Accounting, at Kogod. I'm taking this class because it satisfies a gen ed requirement and it fit nicely into my schedule. That is not to say I have no interest in history or Africa. I actually find African history quite interesting and I am looking forward to learning a lot.

I became interested in Africa when I took a job in Abuja, Nigeria with an NGO in 1999. I fell in love with Africa and I wrote my dissertation on Nigerian political development. I visited AU in Nigeria in January 2008.
I think teaching this class is sometimes even more challenging than taking it! But I love the subject. I am a political scientist by training and this class allows me to read all kinds of materials.
Hi, I'm Alycia, a sophmore in SIS, working towards an international studies major. I'm taking this class because I want to learn more about the African region and to possibly get invovled in issues related to Africa after graduation. I'm really looking forward to learning some new things in this class.
Hey, I'm Lindsey Amato and I'm a junior, majoring in International Service and Peace and Conflict Resolution. I'm also particularly interested in continuing my focus on African studies. Right now, I am interning at a non-profit, watchdog organization known as CREW (Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington). I strive to learn as much as I can about African politics, society, economics, and history so I know this class will be very beneficial. I hope to work in Tanzania potentially after I graduate for a couple of months also and I want to continue to incorporate African studies in whatever career path I take in the future.
Hello, I'm Amy from Charleston, West Virginia. I'm a sophomore majoring in International Studies. I would like to study abroad in Africa my junior year and I'm taking this class to prepare myself. Also I enjoy learning about Africa because I've never really had an opportunity to before this course.
Hi I am Jill Collier. I am a senior psychology major and I am taking this course foremost because I need the gen ed. But also I studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa last year. I had an absolutely amazing experience. I got to meet a lot of wonderful people and I traveled throughout Botswana and Zambia. I am excited about this course because it will be a great opportunity to continue to learn about the complexities of Africa.
