Response to Slavery discussion

Today, the effects of slavery seem to be ever present in today’s society with institutions preventing black people from getting equal rights, to racial profiling from all kinds of people. While I did not speak much in class on the topic of slavery because I did not feel I had a strong opinion on what should be done, after listening to everyone speak their opinion I came to the conclusion that very little can be done to impact the short run.

While some people think that a government apology would be a good direction, I think this would only be words. This does not change individual’s opinions of others around them, and would not prevent discrimination from happening in everyday situations.

I personally think the best thing that can happen is time. While other things need to go along with time. Our parent’s generation who grew up during the civil rights movement have opinions that are not going to change in the rest of their lifetime. What needs to be done is education of future generations. Institutions that hold people back need to be changed for the future in order to dissolve the effects of slavery on today’s economy.
