Slavery Discussion

The slavery discussion we had Monday was pretty intense. I feel like there are an innumerable amount of ways to approach the topic and it's fairly difficult to have a discussion about slavery without bringing racism and class into the foreground of the discussion. Especially in the context of the African American slavery that took place in early America.

As far as solutions go. Although I believe that the concept of reparations (money for descendants of slaves) I do not believe there is any benefit of this practice in reality. Money is only the tip of the iceberg when you approach something as old and deep rooted as racism.

It has been ingrained in media, the workplace, socio-economic structures.

Now, I don't pretend to know anything about socio-economics, race or anthropology.

Beyond all these other issues there is the simple fact of skin color. While many immigrants, even many Indian tribes and others have deraced themselves through marriage and over time and assimilation. African Americans still obviously remain, black. It's a simple fact that unfortunately is unavoidable. This causes a degree of physical disadvantage through our culture and society due to the association of color , class, status and behavior.

Reparations are not the place to start a entire overhaul of our society is necessary. It will take a lot of time to make change- It will just need to be more actively phased out over time.
